“Maybe that’s enlightenment enough: to know that there is no final resting place of the mind; no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom is realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go.” – Anthony Bourdain

Ben Hoser joined Poly Prep’s science faculty in 2024. Prior to joining Poly, Ben has worn many hats in education – teacher, coach, school leader, and curriculum designer. He carries all these experiences with him and is excited to continue learning and growing.

Ben grew up in London, UK and Sydney, Australia, before moving to New York in 2013. Formerly a professional chef, Ben’s enjoyment of training new line cooks inspired him to change careers into education. That same love of teaching, discovery, and lifelong learning remains at the heart of Ben’s work, as well as a specific commitment to supporting English language learners and bringing project-based learning (PBL) to the fore in all of his classes. Ben’s proudest moment in education is presenting on PBL best practices at the AP Annual Conference with his then co-teacher (now wife!).
Ben holds degrees in Geoscience and French from The University of Sydney and Secondary Science Education (Earth Science) from Teachers College, Columbia University. In his free time, he enjoys cooking, rock climbing, camping, and playing Scrabble. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife, son, and two weird and wonderful cats.
